From providing vital nutrients, to giving us the energy we require to get through each day, the food we eat and how we nourish our bodies has a significant impact on our health. Certain foods also have potential health-related benefits – some foods may help fight dementia, and other foods, like Manitoba-grown lingonberries, may help prevent kidney failure.
The Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM) is dedicated to investigating and understanding the potential health benefits of functional foods like lingonberries and flax seed, as well as nutraceuticals and natural health products. Approximately 15 clinical research trials were active last year, testing the health-benefits of everything from peas, to lentils, to canola oil.
