Celebrating Brain Awareness Week

Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders at forefront of neurological research

Established in 1999, The Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders (DND) at St. Boniface Hospital’s Albrechtsen Research Centre is home to world-class researchers looking into different diseases that affect the brain.

Neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, and aging-related degeneration affect thousands of people in Manitoba every year – that’s why it’s important to be brain aware!

As our population ages, these diseases are becoming more prevalent. At St. Boniface Hospital, our researchers are working hard to find causes, treatments, and cures for these debilitating disorders.

Led by Dr. Paul Fernyhough, the team of researchers at DND are focusing on several different studies, including the impact of diabetes on neuron function, nerve damage and memory impairments, and neuron death in Alzheimer’s disease.

There’s so much we don’t yet know about the brain, and St. Boniface Hospital Foundation is proud to support the work of the DND team.
